CCER

July 4, 2008

CCER campus: Langrun Garden (朗润园), a restored prince's villa of Qing Dynasty.

Professor Justin Yifu Lin (林毅夫), Founding Director of CCER (1994- ); World Bank Chief Economist and Senior Vice President (2008- ).

CCER is a preeminent institution of economic research and public policy, co-founded in 1994 by Justin Yifu LIN (林毅夫), YI Gang (易纲,Deputy Governor of the People’s Bank of China; Administrator of the State Administration of Foreign Exchange),HAI Wen (海闻,Vice President, Peking University; Dean, HSBC School of Business), and ZHANG Weiying (张维迎,Dean, Guanghua School of Management).

I was one of the 40 or so students from all over China chosen to participate in the CCER Summer Camp in August 2004.  I was admitted into the Master's program at CCER through the Camp.  Later, I was also admitted into the economics PhD program at Washington University in St. Louis.  Even as I decided to go abroad, the professors and students I met at CCER influenced me deeply.  Over the years, I wrote several articles based upon that experience (and unsurprisingly, all written in Chinese).

1. 《生如夏花》()()():"Life As Summer Flowers," some thoughts written after the conclusion of the Summer Camp.  It came as a 3-part mini-series and was published on the CCER website.  The article has been read over 50,000 times.  The title was adapted from a piece in "Stray Birds" (1916), by the great poet Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941).

2. 站在这红楼绿水之间”(朗诵):Poem Recitation at the CCER Tenth Anniversary, September 18, 2004.

3. “为中心十周年而作”:A poem written for the Tenth Anniversary, September 2004.

4. “给夏令营的兄弟姐妹”:A farewell letter to fellow campers, May 2005
.

5. “祝贺CCER2008届硕士研究生毕业”:Congratulations to the Class of 2008 Masters Program at CCER (half of the 40 graduates were in the 2004 Summer Camp), May 31, 2008.  After the Commencement Ceremony, Professor Lin immediately boarded an air flight to Washington D.C. to assume his new post as the World Bank Chief Economist and Senior Vice President.

6. “CCER毕业典礼上海闻教授的演讲(节录)”:In this Commencement Speech, Professor HAI Wen remembers his meeting with Professor Lin in 1985 in NYC, during the establishment of the Chinese Economists Society (CES, 中国留美经济学会).  Professor Hai speaks highly of Professor Lin's leadership and vision, comparing him to the great educator, Cai Yuanpei (蔡元培,1868-1940), who oversaw the rapid growth and nurtured the liberal spirits of Peking University in the early 20th century.

7. “Talking about 回首三年”:Reflections upon graduation, from my close friend, Mr. Zhong Ninghua, currently a Ph.D. student in finance at the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology (HKUST).
